Is fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi a singer or is he a comedian? The answer is YES to both questions. He displays both of these talents in his fast-moving and very funny show at the Café Carlyle, Isaac Mizrahi: Movie Stars and Supermodels. In this show he mixes anecdotes about the many people he has worked with and his comments about current life, all done with the skill of a great stand-up comedian and with an eclectic mix of songs all done in his very unique style and sound.

The mix makes for 80 minutes of great entertainment. He is backed by a stellar swinging quintet Ben Waltzer (music director, piano) Neal Miner (bass), Joe Perri (percussion), Joe Strasser (drums), and Benny Benack III (trumpet).

Waltzer and Benacker often provide crowd pleasing solo turns in Mizrahi’s vocal numbers.

The show began with Mizrahi belting an appropriate opening number, “The Joker” (Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley). He then introduced the members of the band with very funny comments about each. He did a hilarious monologue attacking today’s social media that ended with him saying “Follow me on Instagram.” Another funny monologue about traveling led into “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” followed by a swinging performance of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields’ “You Wanna Bet.” After years of trying, which he said was like trying to have a baby, he claimed the finally got Sondheim, and proved it with his soft and tender “One More Kiss.” The highlight of the show was his laughter-provoking updated 2020 lyrics for an uncountable number of verses to Cole Porter’s “You’re the Top.” Mizrahi’s raucous performance of Madonna’s hit, “Borderline,” included a jam session with each member of the band performing an applause-provoking solo turn.
