Nick Sula & Scott Gryder

It’s pretty much impossible to get bored at a Scott Gryder show. His high-voltage energy and supple, powerful tenor can’t help but engage. For his sold-out audience at Drew’s on Halsted he performed a program of new and signature songs.

“Pure Imagination” brought reflective moments and a sweet vocal quality. It is interesting that “Mister Cellophane” has become a signature song for him. Gryder, who usually leads with power chops, finds the interpretive and musical ebb and flow within this song that is so much about self-esteem. He moves often and with considerable grace. Being still is not always in his wheelhouse, but when he is, such as at the beginning of “Moon River,” he takes the audience to a quieter place that adds needed contrast to his high-octane numbers. He was effective flexing his comedy chops with “Ahead of My Time,” a musical journey delivered by a gay caveman.

Years ago, this reporter heard both Gryder and Nick Sula (Gryder’s real-life spouse) in a charming duet of “(I’d Like to Get You on) A Slow Boat to China” and hopes they perform that again along with and more duets. When Gryder closed his show with Carol Burnett’s theme song, “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together,” not only do we believe him, we certainly share the feeling.
