Missy Karle
More to the Story

Missy Karle brought a big smile and a big voice to her Davenport’s debut, More to the Story. This young lady possesses an impressive vocal range and certainly can belt.
Her eclectic song selections ranged from country to pop, with many Broadway selections; Karle’s sensibilities are clearly rooted in musical theater.
However, she accomplished the dynamics of the small cabaret room best in “I’ll Be Here” (Adam Gwon from Ordinary Days). It tells the story of a love ended (or perhaps not) by a death on 9/11. Karle delivered it with simple honesty, clearly moving her audience.

One number with outstanding musicality was a unique rendition that infused new life into “Tomorrow” (Annie); it started in blues tempo then morphed into a rock beat. Karle was nicely supported by guests Khaki Pixley and Hillary Marren.

Superb musical direction from Nick Sula was no surprise to Chicago cabaret fans, and while Ben Domhoff did well on percussion, for audience members who sat near stage left in Davenport’s cozy space, the drums sometimes drowned out the vocals. Karle can certainly deliver a song with loads of energy and volume, but in a small room, it’s more effective to sing to the people than it is to sing to the rafters. This vocalist is quite talented and ready to discover that in cabaret, less is often more.
