Actor Therapy’s celebration of its newest alumni batch was a complete success. Showcasing their newly minted singers in an exciting song sequence, Lindsay Mendez (Carousel) and Ryan Scott Oliver’s (35MM) workshop proved to be capable of producing clean singers with fluid acting chops who could easily impress and be enjoyed.

There were many highlights to the night which featured 14 singers with generally unique styles performing multiple songs. Everyone did both a solo and duet and host Mathieu Whitman (an alum) joined in for a solo. To select a few favorites from the group we’d have to focus on Chelsea Moss, Mariel Blatt, and Larry Luck. Among a group that produced number after number of crisp songs with moving facial expressions and powerful timing, this trio stood out for their additional combination of attitude, pizzazz, and showmanship.

Luck performed a strong “What Do I Need with Love?” from Thoroughly Modern Millie. His quip about removing a mic from the camera’s view turned into a lovable anecdote as he cruised through the number which requires fluidity and poise. Moss sang “Sonya Alone” from Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, easily winning the audience with her consistent volume and good, fluid pitch changes, serenading us with, “I know you are capable of anything/I know you so well, my friend.” Blatt chose a little more of a fun song with “The Music That Makes Me Dance (Funny Girl) where her exciting hip swings added to her strong voice.

Others of particular note included Carly Messig and Kim Onah who showcased similar levels of adept vocal ability. The other performers were Ethan Carlson, Sara Cuozzo, Danny DiMarino, Cassidy Layton, Miranda Luze, Jared Reed, Rachel Romo, Mari Uchida, and Alixe Ward. The group will get another chance to impress a sold-out audience on March 25 with music director Jason Wetzel reprising his role at the piano! Have fun!
