The Pretty Sad White Girls showed up and showed out at the classic music venue on Bleecker, The Bitter End. Featuring the musical comedic duo of Jillian Schiralli and Lisa Bettencourt to rival the 1973 headliners Cheech and Chong, PSWG kept their local and live streaming (a consistent gag by Bettencourt) fans happy. While not all the jokes split sides and not all of the songs were originals that seemed to fit (even a compelling and well-performed “Dust in the Wind”), the duo did write clever originals that went into both the deep and shallow ends of modern dating, asking questions like, “If ‘Heidi Klum and Seal’ can’t make it, can we?” and “Where are you looking?”

Bettencourt brought the guitar and was on point from song one with consistently good licks. Schiralli’s singing and sass were a pleasant surprise as she appeared to play the initiator of a lot of the band’s smart side stories.

Their show slid succinctly and subtly through the tale of a hapless party gone sorta right, sorta wrong. Joining them for about half the songs was violinist Danielle Marien Turano, who played swift and strong.

The group is worth investigating even if they are as pretty sad and pretty white as their aptly named intro song suggested, with lyrics such as “Buzzfeed is my news source/I used to ride a show horse.

” The self-deprecating moments aside, they also did a good job of getting men involved with the song “Written by the Men of Tinder,” where they delivered good lines to walk away with like ,“Don’t worry, I’m definitely taller than you.”

Check these gals out!
