Songs I’m Too Old to Sing

Bruce Ward had a blast and so did his friends and guests at his heartwarming show on the eve of his 60th birthday. Friends from throughout his life came into town to hear his songs and stories showing how charming and endearing he is and has always been. I’m sure his friends would say he hasn’t changed a bit as he reminisced through the stages of his life with the songs of then Broadway.

Ward worked within himself and to his skills, at times stopping well-known, but difficult, songs before even singing a line! After the third time, he said “Oh, I’m such a tease,” to which a few people replied, “Yeah, you are.” His sense of humor aside, he played off his audience well and did pull off multiple wonderful selections, including Rodger & Hammerstein’s Carousel “Soliloquy.” He brought a nice touch to the piece by bringing extra flair to the second half.

We had so much fun with Ward that even his ill-fated high school flame, Ellen Kazis-Walker, joined him on stage for a pair of classics: “Wunderbar” and “’Till There Was You.” She and her fabulous voice worked and fit well with Ward as they rekindled some of their old spark. Ward even gave her a set of red roses! He was later joined by friends from the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus—Matt Mroczka and James M. Teague—for a fun “Out Tonight” as they danced in black greaser outfits.

Also, I can’t forget to mention the talented Jimmy Horan, the evening’s pianist and musical director. He’s a pleasure to hear perform. All in all, Bruce Ward gave us a good time with a nostalgic and meaningful tribute to his friends on the eve of an impressive milestone.
