Jerome Elliott performed in a magical musical evening at the Camelot Theatre in the Palm Springs Cultural Center in celebration of his 70th birthday. The songs were well-conceived with charm, love, and beautiful memories. This was a personal show that spanned his career in New York, San Francisco, and Palm Springs. It was directed by Tim Ewing with first-class pianist Christopher Marlowe as music director and arranger.
Elliott’s opening number was the uplifting “Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries” (Ray Henderson/Lew Brown) and was a great choice. He followed with a medley of “The Summer Knows” and “Summer Me, Winter Me” (both by (Alan and Marlyn Bergman/Michel Legrand) that displayed his vocal talents. Highlights included “Hello, Young Lovers” (Rodgers & Hammerstein), which was a standout. His voice continues to improve. He also included great versions of “She Loves Me” (Jerry Bock & Sheldon Harnick), “Where Do You Start” (Alan and Marilyn Bergman/Johnny Mandel), “When the Sun Comes Out” (Ted Koehler/Harold Arlen), “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” (Frank Loesser). His encore, which was a lovely way to end the evening, was his rendition of “Before We Say Goodbye” (Tom Andersen/Ian Herman).
