Michele Brourman

Singer/songwriter Michele Brourman may be diminutive in height, but she stands tall in talent. In “The Price of Love” (lyrics: Robin Brourman Munson; music: Michele Brourman) she tenderly sang about the loss of a pet. Noticing her tearful audience, Brourman began to apologize, then said, “It’s okay, this is our job.” Indeed, it is the job of the effective cabaret artist to enable audience members to touch feelings. “Voter’s Prayer” with lyrics by Amanda McBroom, is hilarious, reminding each politician to “keep it in your pants.” Given the fractious state of American politics, those laughs were welcomed.

Love Letters is Brourman’s solo Chicago debut and she shared her affection for the Windy City with stories about studying and performing here. Her guest, onetime sorority “mother” Joanie Winter, delivered “Old Love” (McBroom/Brourman) with the simplicity and wit it merits. Classically trained Winter always had chops, but she has become a first-rate cabaret interpreter.

Brourman’s best recognized song is “My Favorite Year.” It is based on the film of the same title and has lyrics by Karen Gottlieb. Brourman shared the story of a promise by someone ostensibly connected with the producer to pass the song through the right channel. It never happened. Nevertheless “My Favorite Year” has been covered well by the finest cabaret and concert artists.
