One evening over drinks in someone’s living room, two of Chicago’s top cabaret pianists started jamming on a single piano. Their talented spouses joined in the free-wheeling fun, and an idea was sparked for a brightly unique show: 2 Couples—2 Pianos—Too Much Fun.
The show debuted at the elegant PianoForte on a stage dominated by two luscious black grand pianos.

The individual players were Beckie Menzie, singing pianist and crown jewel of Chicago cabaret; Mark Burnell, playful piano jazz cat; Anne Burnell, swinging songstress; and Irwin Berkowitz, accomplished drummer.
Like kids on a playground, these four musicians kept swapping instruments, solos, and harmonies on songs ranging from standards to pop to bebop. Their warm camaraderie kept the us grinning throughout.
Each married couple had their moments to shine. Menzie and Berkowitz bantered about their honeymoon, segueing into a beautifully tender duet, “When the Right One Comes Along.” The Burnells wowed with “All About That Bass,” featuring Anne’s vocals punctuated by Mark’s funky vocal bass lines.
The sparkly-gowned ladies got fierce on “Give Me One Reason”/“Crazy.” Menzie’s rendition of “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” was a tour de force.
Most exhilarating were piano duets between Beckie and Mark.

Their faces beamed with joy as their fingers flew through improvised magic, gracefully handing the spotlight back and forth. We went nuts over their comic dueling piano shtick on “Love Is Here to Stay.” Too much fun!
