Our Time Players

Evolution of Music

The Duplex, NYC, July 28, 2018

Our Time Players, a New York area theater company, presents the showcase, The Evolution of Music, running through the end of summer and into early fall. Led by Master of Ceremonies and queen of self-deprecating humor Jenna Summer, the group presented songs that progressed from the 1960s to the 2010s. As always with a showcase that included a total of nine singers (though only one man), some performers stand out more than others.

Each singer had a solo or were part of a trio, where he or she got the chance to make his or her mark, placed between songs performed by the whole cast.

My two favorite performers were Olivia Gordon and Candace Haynes. Gordon performed “Beautiful” (Linda Perry) made famous by Christina Aquilera.

Gordon exhibiting delicacy along with an ample enough range to nail some of Aguilera’s intricacies.

Haynes was a little more conventional, choosing Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” a song that exudes energy in every line, Haynes made sure to match the intensity well. Also worth extra mention are Kayla Matters, who chose “Since U Been Gone” (Max Martin/ Lukasz Gottwald), displaying a strong vocal line, and Maya Avisar’s “I Feel the Earth Move” (Carole King) who flashed her potential.

Other performers included Danika St.
