Actress and jazz vocalist Linda Purl joined forces with Sherrie Maricle’s DIVA Jazz Orchestra for a dynamic tribute to the great female jazz singers of all time. Purl has a nice sound and her stage presence is a tribute to her lengthy career on stage and screen. The Divas are an amazing all-female orchestra whose dynamism is catching.
The Divas opened the show with a bombastic “What the World Needs Now.” The very attractive Purl opened with “This Could Be the Start of Something.” A tribute to Billie Holiday had the band playing softly for “Trav’lin’ Light,” followed by Purl’s very kinetic “Them There Eyes.” She performed “The Nearness of You” with a light Latin background in tribute to Helen Merrill.
Maricle’s drum solo on “Nobody Else But Me” was reminiscent of those by Gene Krupa when Anita O’Day sang with his band.

Purl’s voice rose with the sun in her tribute to Peggy Lee on “When the Sun Comes Out.” The Divas and the singer combined for a “”S Wonderful” celebration of Ella Fitzgerald. Tom Wopat joined Purl for “Come Rain or Come Shine” after her warm story about Rosemary Clooney.

She showed her chanteuse side by closing with a soft “My Romance” with just music director Tedd Firth on piano.
