Attending a Sharón Clark show always gives you two for the price of one. Clark is a vocalist whose sound, vocal range and exquisite diction is eerily reminiscent of “The Divine One”— Sarah Vaughan. Clark is equally adept at performing jazz classics, standards from the Great American Songbook and, for this show, holiday favorites.

In addition, you get a jazz concert featuring her trio, with Musical Director Chris Grasso on piano, Michael O’Brien on bass, Lenny Robinson on drums and guest pianist, the truly amazing Joel Martin.

Clark’s confidence in her ability enables the trio to take over in many of her numbers, giving each musician the opportunity to showcase his skill.

Although she was seated for the entire show, her facial expressions really moved.
The trio opened the show with a light jazzy treatment of “A Beautiful Friendship.” Clark began with “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” her lengthy scatting à la Ella Fitzgerald showed off her marvelous range. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” showed her softer side and beautiful sound.

Her facial expressions on the sexually suggestive “Social Call” made it fun to listen to. She is a true jazz vocalist, so every song is given a unique arrangement by Grasso. This was especially true of her swinging “Silent Night,” featuring a lengthy jam session by the trio.

Let It Show! Let It Snow!” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” was a reminder of the season. Pianist Martin replaced Grasso and provided a super-fast backing to Clark’s scatting on “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).
