Ali’s Single Release Party

The Duplex, NYC, August 9, 2019

Reviewed by Bart Greenberg for Cabaret Scenes

In honor of the release of her self-written single, “The New Me,” Ali Schwartz made a remarkable cabaret debut. Her self-possession and confidence belie her young age and inexperience. Warm, funny, and committed to her performance, she didn’t let an over-enthusiastic (sometimes to the point of hysteria) audience break her concentration. Telling loving stories about her family (many of whom were present), the star made clear where she came from and how she gained her philosophy in life: “take a risk!”

Her taste in music is for contemporary rock, as she made clear while she propelled herself around the stage, dancing and encouraging sing-alongs on certain up-tempo numbers. Her band also joined in on vocals, with music director/pianist Andy King, guitarist Luis D’Elias, and drummer Marc Smith contributing a great deal to the fun.

Schwartz’s strong soprano is very flexible, going from bluesy honesty in “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (Bonnie Raitt) to exuberant belt on “Ain’t Got Far to Go” (Jess Glynne) without ever losing her pinpoint enunciation.

She also exhibited an ability for intriguing phrasing with “Price Tag” (Jessie J). It would be intriguing at some point to hear her tackle some selections from the Great American Songbook, but for now. her sheer talent and energy carry her through.

Bart Greenberg

Bart Greenberg first discovered cabaret a few weeks after arriving in New York City by seeing Julie Wilson and William Roy performing Stephen Sondheim and Cole Porter outdoors at Rockefeller Center. It was instant love for both Ms. Wilson and the art form. Some years later, he was given the opportunity to create his own series of cabaret shows while working at Tower Records. "Any Wednesday" was born, a weekly half-hour performance by a singer promoting a new CD release. Ann Hampton Callaway launched the series. When Tower shut down, Bart was lucky to move the program across the street to Barnes & Nobel, where it thrived under the generous support of the company. The series received both The MAC Board of Directors Award and The Bistro Award. Some of the performers who took part in "Any Wednesday" include Barbara Fasano and Eric Comstock, Tony Desare, Andrea Marcovicci, Carole Bufford, the Karens, Akers, Mason and Oberlin, and Julie Wilson. Privately, Greenberg is happily married to writer/photographer Mark Wallis, who as a performance artist in his native England gathered a major following as "I Am Cereal Killer."
