Meghan Murphy
The Big Red Show

Sassy Meghan Murphy brings an ocean of talent and fun to The Big Red Show. Sporting big red hair and a sparkly red gown cut down to Guadalajara, she can belt your socks off one moment on “Come Rain or Come Shine,” make you laugh big the next with hilarious adult-content schmooze, then reach deep into your heart with a simple and sad delivery of “Drinking Again.” Murphy has a big, energetic presence, yet she always manages to make her audience feel embraced and befriended in an honest way. Her song selections are eclectic, ranging from Kander and Ebb’s “But the World Goes ’Round” to pop standards like “You Don’t Own Me,” which she delivers with just the right balance of anger and growing self-esteem. Her original “Skinny Bigness” is an in-your-face salute to skinny guys and is most definitely not for the kids.

Murphy is a first-class vocalist whose alto can reach to the rafters and can find a feminine fragility when it should. She was well served by accompanist Jimmy Morehead.
The Venus Cabaret at the Mercury Theater is an excellent and underused cabaret space seating 80 that offers excellent sound and a fine piano. The venue would do well to book The Big Red Show again soon.
