Lorna Luft
An Evening with Lorna Luft
On Stage At Kingsborough, Brooklyn, NY, May 10, 2019

Lorna Luft took to the stage at Kingsborough to an overwhelming reception from an appreciative audience and performed a consistently good set. The theme of the evening was aptly summed up in her early song, “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” (Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen). It represented just one of the positive themes she highlighted from the songs of yesteryear. After the topsy-turvy years she’s had recently, getting back to what she loves most—singing—felt right.

Of course, there are times other than being on stage when singing a song can make a memory.

For example, when young granddaughters ask their grandma to serenade them. Luft shared those moments too, relating the story of one starry night when she sang “When You Wish Upon a Star” (Leigh Harline/Ned Washington) to her young granddaughter.
Luft consistently reinforced her positive message, reminding each of us to be “A Cockeyed Optimist” (Rodgers & Hammerstein), and that if anything, the story of her life can be captioned as “Let Me Sing and I’m Happy” (Irving Berlin). The latter was used in White Christmas, in which Luft got the opportunity to perform years ago by chance, and she has often performed in the show during the past decade. “A Cockeyed Optimist” featured the strongest arrangement by husband/music director Colin Freeman, who supported her well from behind the grand piano.
Luft and Freeman saved the best for last when they performed, “Not Even Nominated,” by Fred Ebb and Larry Grossman. It was a fitting end to the evening. Luft discussed her recent time at the Oscars and then launched into the song, which repeated the phrase, “not even nominated” in between songs that hadn’t made the cut over the years.

A fine example of one of the songs included in the medley was “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (Hugh Martin). Luft and Freeman were joined by Joshua Priest on drums and Jim Danca on bass.
