In A Baritone on Broadway, Paul Motondo delivers his journey as an aspiring musical theater performer with wit and warmth. Although his story is personal, we can certainly relate to the steps forward as well as backward that we experience in pursuit of our dreams. Motondo recalls auditions that didn’t pan out, but never once whines.

Vocally, his baritone is supple and rich as he delivers a program mainly of Broadway classics.
With “If I Sing,” by Maltby and Shire from the musical revue Closer Than Ever, Motondo tenderly shares how his parents, early on, ignited his interest in music, especially show tunes.
The show also landed strong comedy moments in the hilarious (not for the kiddies) “It’s Not Just for Gays Anymore.” It was written by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger for host Neil Patrick Harris to open the 2011 Tony Awards and won an Emmy the following year. Beckie Menzie accompanied Motondo just right and managed some clever zingers in their duet of Irving Berlin’s “You’re Just in Love.
” Ending with a beautifully sung “The Impossible Dream” reminded us that it is lovely to cherish our achievements and learn from our challenges.
The quest itself for a dream—for example being a baritone on Broadway—has its own nobility.
