Tovah Feldshuh had me convinced that she was Leona Helmsley in her fast, funny, and vastly entertaining show Tovah Is Leona! at Feinstein’s/54 Below. The six-time Tony and Emmy Award nominee is a marvelous actress, with a wonderful singing voice, and a flair for comedy. The show featured highlights from her Broadway-bound musical Queen of Mean. The show has Feldshuh as Helmsley, making her case to escape from purgatory. The new songs by David Lee and Ron Passaro are mixed with songs appropriately chosen from the Great American Songbook to advance her defense. She was ably assisted on piano by her music director James Bassi, who displayed an excellent singing voice when joining her in song. Jeff Harnar directed.

Feldshuh began the show walking through the audience, saying “I have not heard so much applause since my funeral.” Her opening number combined “It’s Today” with “Top of the World.” Feldshuh has a wonderful knack for getting big laughter out of funny songs like “Real Estate, “ which described how Helmsley began her career selling apartments. “I’m Just Wild About Harry” described her relation with Harry Helmsley and led into “No Limits,” describing the Helmsleys’ rise to the top of the New York real estate business. “The Helmsley’s Pay” described their problems with the IRS and was followed by a rousing “Jailhouse Rock.

” Feldshuh closed with a very sad “The Party’s Over.” Her encore was “Leona’s Mega Medley” a collection of almost 20 songs about the New York that the Helmsleys helped bring back to its former greatness, ending with a very moving “My Way.

Having seen this show about the woman whose motto was “Perfect is not good enough,” I look forward to seeing the full-blown Broadway production.
