Frannie Bannocks & Stewart Davies

Frannie Bannocks and Stewart Davies brought an eclectic mix of music to The Duplex in a heavily ’80s electronic-themed show that featured the style of the Eurythmics—a duo whose iconic dress, style, and showmanship Bannocks and Davies copied neatly. Not just the names: Frannie Bannocks = Annie Lennox; Stewart Davies = David Stewart. The two played off each other well, moving from classic ballads such as “The Look of Love” (Burt Bacharach and Hal David) to medleys that exemplified the different phases of the Bannocks/Davies band, Your Rhythm Mix.

Blaming their lack of success on the Eurythmics for hijacking their style, the show centered around Bannocks and Davies’ cross-continental tale of woe. To this point, they had evaded detection by ICE and had been living undocumented in the U.

S. under a pool table, only to be outed by an inspector who allowed them one last show. Of course, his heart warmed to the band after he heard the odes to love—obsessive, toxic, and physical—that made up Your Rhythm Mix’s medleys.

Possibly more than that, it was the moment when Davies broke his dead-eye stare on the back door to tenderly caress his keytar, an instrument he wielded wisely.

More than anything, Davies’ rock-solid gaze and ability to hold in any laughter at Bannocks’ multitude of side jokes and jabs made this show.

As she described running grade B maple syrup across the border from Canada to the U.S. as the type of despicable act on the level of dealing cocaine to minors, he didn’t move a muscle — not even his hands, which remained poised ready to play the next number. Perhaps they could have focused more songs on the Eurythmics as they only performed “Here Comes the Rain Again” all the way through, but I’m sure they’ll put on another show for their dedicated fan base soon!
