Shawn Ryan is the master of the ridiculous, completely owning this subgenre of comic cabaret with his quick wit and charm. Opening with a send-up of the Hot Chelle Rae pop hit ‘Tonight, Tonight” — which segues into a hilarious new take on a “Snow White” character worker at Disneyland who “…said the F word,” Ryan mines the material for all its worth with campy moves, plenty of eye rolls and sly comments. Susan Werner’s smart “Movie of My Life” about the grandiose dreams of a mediocre schlump is perfect fodder for Ryan’s style. “Stop Wondering,” a delightfully sassy romantic rebuke, is another comic jewel that Ryan enhances with his effusion of gay overtones.
Perfect examples of Ryan’s delight of sexual innuendo are his takes on Peter Mills’s “Way Ahead of My Time” (“The Caveman Song”) and “If I Can’t Sell It (I’m Going to Keep Sitting on It”) made famous by Bessie Smith. The former is a prehistoric coming-out story that never quite reveals the character’s budding homosexuality, instead calling himself a “homo sapien who’s an intellectual.

” Silly and smart — and Ryan works it delightfully. Usually a woman’s overtly sexual come-on, “If I Can’t Sell It…” becomes both raunchy and comic in Ryan’s deft hands. Brandy Clark’s hit “Stripes” is a bitter romantic ditty about a potentially lethal outcome averted by the characters loathing of the color orange and an aversion to stripes.

Ryan is totally comfortable onstage and works the crowd like a master MC, bantering off the cuff with both bandmates and audience members. The arrangements are divine and part of the enjoyment of a Shawn Ryan show is his knack for discovering new material to turn on its head. Part burlesque, part Broadway, part vaudeville comic, Ryan continues a fine tradition of comedian vocalists.
