Sarah Spiegel is usually waiting tables at Catalina Jazz Club, but she moved into the spotlight to present songs from the Big Band era. Dressed in a beautiful vintage dress, she opened with “Sentimental Journey,” singing with a sound very much of the ‘30s and ‘40s. With a bright, clear voice and perky personality, she perfectly captured the era she loves. Her expressive face added another level of interpretation to the songs. A sweet and simple “Embraceable You” showed she could effectively handle ballads. There was a contemporary note to the show when she was joined by guest star Jake Simpson for a duet on “I Get a Kick Out of You.” His contemporary style blended nicely with her traditional one.

Spiegel paid tribute to one of her favorite big band singers, Bea Wain, with a lovely version of one of the hit songs she introduced, “The Masquerade Is Over.” Spiegel briefly talked about a recent personal loss, which led her to write a very personal, sentimental song, “Momma, Sweet Momma.
