Ebersole_Christine500Two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole was joined by The Aaron Weinstein Trio to showcase tracks from her latest CD, Strings Attached. Ebersole and jazz violinist Weinstein both attended the same high school and she actually played the violin in her youth. You rarely, if ever, hear violin in the context of cabaret, but after the opening instrumental cover of “Just One of Those Things,” the idea seemed not only plausible, but positively enchanting.

Ebersole has a light, breezy style, uncomplicated and unencumbered by swagger or bluster.

What she sings, she sings well, as in a lovely version of Finian’s Rainbow’s “How Are Things in Glocca Morra” and Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer’s “This Time the Dream’s on Me.” Weinstein’s violin work weaved into soft ballads like “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” and “Right as The Rain” adding a melancholy sweetness.

On swing numbers (“Something There” and his stunning instrumental on “I Want to Be Happy”), New Yorker Weinstein added a musical texture reminiscent of early 20th century ethnic music. That’s the intention behind the Strings Attached and the result is great collaboration.
