Music director/pianist Wayne Abravanel started off The Best of Broadway with a grand overture that included “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Mame,” and “Oklahoma!,” after which Francesca Amari offered the perfect opening number, “Cabaret” (Kadner & Ebb). Next came Kim Schroeder Long and Tod Macofsky performing the hit songs “On the Street Where You Live” (Alan Jay Lerner/Frederick Loewe from My Fair Lady) and “Don’t Rain on My Parade” (Jule Styne/Bob Merrill from Funny Girl).
To open Act Two, Abravanel performed George and Ira Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm,” after which Kim Schroeder Long added “I Dreamed a Dream” (Claude-Michel Schonberg/Alain Boubil/Herbert Kretmer from Les Misérables). Then Macofsky, who was in great voice, gave us “Luck Be a Lady (Frank Loesser from Guys and Dolls). The second act closed with Amari and Long having fun with “What Is This Feeling” (Stephen Schwartz from Wicked); they were hilarious!
In Act Three, Macofsky sang “Almost Like Being in Love” (Lerner and Loewe from Brigadoon). Amari performed a beautiful and very strong rendition of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” (Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice from Evita), and Long closed the act with a roaring rendition of “Everything Coming Up Roses” (Styne/Stephen Sondheim from Gypsy). The entire cast performed a great finale with the Ethel Merman hit from Annie Get Your Gun, Irving Berlin’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” The event was produced by Michael Fietsam, who, along with David Horgan, owns PS Underground.
