Washington-based favorite Guy Bosworth was bitten by the travel bug as a small child and realized his dreams when he became a flight attendant. He often flew chartered trips that were aviation’s version of a round-the-world cruise. These itineraries inspired a charming and sophisticated evening of musical postcards. Bosworth set a playful tone by entering the show room with a tray of drinks and he deftly dipped to offer them to audience members.
With his warm and supple baritone, Bosworth opened with a medley of “Take Me to the World” (Stephen Sondheim) and “First You Dream” (Kander & Ebb). The heart of the show was a love letter to Paris. He showed off his comedic side with “The French Song” (Lucille Starr) and included a rueful and tender rendition of “Paris Is a Lonely Town” (Harold Arlen/E.Y. Harburg). He has mastered the ability to use his voice’s many colors and dynamics to fit each selection; his soaring and emotional version of “It All Fades Away” (Jason Robert Brown) was particularly satisfying. Beckie Menzies’ witty “Travel Medley” ended the show; it captivated the audience and showed off Bosworth’s versatility. Music director/pianist Howard Breitbart (billed as “the navigator”) was a nimble sidekick whose clever musical riffs and jokes enlivened the proceedings. The show was directed by Lina Koutrakos.
