The 48th edition of Scott Siegel’s (pictured) Broadway’s Greatest Hits put together a cast of the best voices of the Broadway and cabaret worlds, featuring very talented young singers and, just to make the show extra special, he added the amazing dancer Danny Gardner. As is always the case, the song list included many of Broadway’s best songs from the 1920s to the present.

It was not surprising to me, that although New York City was largely deserted for the Labor Day weekend, this show was SRO.

As always, Siegel’s introductory comments to each number were informative, interesting, and often laugh-out-loud funny.

Sean Harkness on guitar was a valuable addition and music director John Boswell’s work on piano matched perfectly with each vocalist’s sound and style.

Before giving his thrilling vocal performance of “On the Street Where You Live,” Ben Jones opened the show by delivering the introductory lines from My Fair Lady, joined by Siegel, who for the first (and possibly the last) time performed as an actor. Jones brought his booming voice, excellent diction, and acting to “Who Am I?” Tiffany Tatreu sang a lovely “Wonderful Guy” and a rocking “Fools Fall in Love.” The beautiful Stephanie Backastow displayed her equally beautiful soprano with her performance of “Someone to Watch Over Me,” including the verse.

Marcus Lovett has a Broadway record that will never be broken; in the space of 24 hours he played the leading role in two Broadway musicals, The Phantom of the Opera and Carousel. He reprised numbers from each, performing a very dramatic and kinetic “Soliloquy” followed by a loving duet with his daughter Cathryn on “All I Ask of You,” featuring a few humorous touches.
