Coby Koehl

Coby Koehl presents shows regularly at 53 Above. With a big voice and a touch of kindness, he’s able to capture and engage his audience’s attention. At this outing, he offered a solid set of pop songs with a few originals interspersed. Noteworthy is his large voice, which he uses almost like an alto sax. He’s very aware of his unique talent, and the result showed as he crooned ballad after ballad.

Koehl is a consistent performer, and he was able to read the audience vibe.

There isn’t any particular theme to his show, but there were a handful of down songs. For example, Julie London’s version of “Bye Bye Blackbird” (Mort Dixon/Ray Henderson), starts out with the line “No one here can love or understand me.” He followed that up with Billie Holiday’s “Fine and Dandy (My Man Don’t Love Me)” and “On & On” (Erikah Badu/JaBorn Jamal).

The theme of these three songs could viewed as self-reflection, emphasizing the message of moving on from disappointment.

Koehl brings a lot of energy and personality to his shows, and he’s sure to be uplifting, even if he throws a few f-bombs into his lyrics.

He shares interesting stories between his songs about what his experience has been performing in NYC.
