In the aptly titled Beatles Reimagined, cabaret duo Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael plumb the treasure trove that is the Beatles repertoire. Menzie and Michael are not about covers. Their well accomplished mission is to approach Beatles’ songs from unexpected angles. In a section featuring songs about loneliness, the duo deliver the haunting “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back.” Michael captures both the sensuality and gentle wit of “Something in the Way He Moves.” Following a story about alleged romance between John Lennon and the Beatles’ early manager Brian Epstein, “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” expressed challenges to being different in a judgmental world. Menzie’s slow, spare offering of “Help” (paired with “Across the Universe”) morphs from pop tune to become a poignant cry that stays in our thoughts long after.

The duet pairing of “Money Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” has ear-catching syncopation and a quite funny bigtime ending. Their new angle on “When I’m Sixty-Four” morphs into the parody lyric “When I’m Eighty-Four” as the duo conjures funny images of walk-in tubs and dentures.
