Arizona received a special gift when Ann Hampton Callaway became an official resident of our state. We can only hope that this means more cabaret performances from this award-winning recording and stage artist. In her first appearance with the Arizona Musicfest she opened with early Barbra Streisand song selections: “Sleepin’ Bee” (Harold Arlen/Truman Capote), “Cry Me a River” (Arthur Hamilton), and “Down with Love” (Arlen/E.Y. Harburg). The audience loved “The Way We Were” (Marvin Hamlisch/Alan & Marilyn Bergman) and I was impressed with her upbeat jazz arrangement of “Evergreen” (Streisand/Paul Williams).

Callaway, recently voted by BroadwayWorld as Performer of the Year, seems ageless. She has a vocal range from sultry and subtle to hair-raising scat reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald. Her sister Liz does a bit about forgetting the lyrics to “Another Hundred People” (Sondheim), so when Ann went up on the lyrics to “Cockeyed Optimist” (Rodgers & Hammerstein), I wondered if it were planned.

But I think she was being honestly human and gave every singer in the room confidence to be authentic, especially if you can rhyme on the spot.

Her comic and lyric genius was again displayed when she asked the audience for names and places and then wrote and played “Barbra’s next big hit.”

“At the Same Time” is the first of Ann’s own songs that Streisand recorded on her Higher Ground album in 1997. She also wrote the lyrics to “I’ve Dreamed of You” (music by Rolf Lovland), which she finished just in time for the Streisand/Brolin wedding in 1998. Both songs created an intimate connection with her audience.

“People” (Jule Styne/Bob Merrill) in medley with “Being Alive” (Sondheim) soared as one of several musical highlights throughout the evening. We are lucky to now call the “Diva” one of our own.

She was accompanied by Christian Jacob (piano), Trey Henry (bass), MB Grod (drums), Larry Koones (guitar), and Bob Sheppard (saxophone and flute).
