What a nice way to spend Valentine’s Day eve—according to Michael Winther, “The night when there is still hope”—seeing and hearing Winther and piano virtuoso Matt Baker perform a delicious collection of love songs dealing with the many aspects of love. Winther is a vocalist with a strong voice and excellent elocution, but it is his dramatic skills that make him special.
His versatility as a vocalist was on display when he covered songs associated with singer-songwriters James Taylor and Jason Robert Brown.

Winther and Baker got equal billing, as Bakers work on piano was an integral part of each number they performed. Guest-star vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli sang one solo number and joined Winther for two duets.
The opening number, “My Foolish Heart,” was followed by “Love for Sale” with Winther’s facial expressions and body language adding to the intensity of his performance. The very logical mash-up of “Let’s Get Lost” and “I Got Lost in His Arms” featured a soft piano backup.
Winther’s “I’m Gonna Live ’Til I Die” was a tribute to his late father. Baker had a solo spot with a dazzling, very jazzy “Lucky to Be Me.

” After hearing Baker’s jazzy solo, Winther remarked “I never scat on a first date.” He slowed things down with a dramatic “I’ll Be Tired of You.
” Stravelli’s voice and impeccable phrasing made her up-tempo “Old Devil Moon” a delight. She joined Winther for a fun-filled duet on “(They Long to Be) Close to You” with the audience joining in on the fun.

Winther showed that he could do some soul singing with “The Hardest Hill” (Jason Robert Brown).

The closing number was a duet originally performed by Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand—“Get Happy”/“Happy Days Are Here Again”—with Winther doing the Garland part and Stravelli doing the Streisand part.
“Rainbow Connection” as an encore was a nice way to end the evening.
