Nellie McKay is a one-of-a-kind cabaret performer. When she does a new show, you never know what to expect. In fact, you never know what McKay is going to look like.

What you do know is that you will hear her unique sound and her amazing stride piano playing, plus her work on keyboards, banjo, and harmonica. Her show at the beautiful new Birdland Theater was an eclectic collection of more than two dozen songs, which included 1920’s and 1930’s standards mixed with calypso, jazz, and blues. Her quirky demeanor and off the cuff remarks were frequently hilarious.

McKay’s piano playing à la Fats Waller made her performance of his “All My Life” memorable. She sang both Ella Fitzgerald’s and the back-up singers’ parts in her lively “A-Tisket, A-Tasket.” Her very different but very good “Body and Soul” resonated with me. Playing her banjo on a calypso song, McKay got the audience to join in.

She began “Willow Weep for Me” very slowly and then sped it up for a lightning fast finish. Her stride piano and vocal were truly remarkable on “(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue.” Her work on keyboards was marvelous on her original, the very interesting “No Equality.
” Next to closing she became serious with a very nice performance of “Everything Happens to Me.” She closed this vastly entertaining and very different show with another of her originals, the very descriptive “Manhattan Avenue.
