They’re young. They’re in love. And can they sing! The just-turned-30 duo of Vasily Deris and Sophie Grimm know how to entertain. While both are confident performers with noteworthy vocal gifts, they also bring innocent, endearing moments to their performance.

We chuckled warmly when Grimm explained how the proceeds from their performance would pay for their wedding. They duetted gracefully in their opening “Steppin’ Medley” (“Steppin’ Out with My Baby”/“I Won’t Dance”/“Cheek to Cheek”/“It Don’t Mean A Thing (if It Ain’t Got That Swing”). Deris is a big guy with a big voice. While at times he seemed almost too big for cozy Davenport’s, his simple, honest delivery of “Get Here” (Brenda Russell) demonstrated how he can deliver in an intimate way.

Another tender moment occurred when he expressed gratitude to his no-nonsence Greek “Yaya” (grandmother), honoring her with an effective pairing of “Over the Rainbow” and “Home”(from The Wiz). Grimm, who has been generating considerable buzz in both jazz and cabaret is as much at home at Davenport’s as she was in a recent performance at the cavernous Auditorium Theater.

She flexed blissfully loose jazz chops on “Farmer’s Market” navigating deftly through the speedbumps on the musical and lyrical riffs. Her offering of “Lovesick Blues” demonstrated why this show tune from the 1920s stays popular in many musical genres. If these millennials represent the new generation of cabaraiders, the art is clearly in good hands.
