The title of Cheryl Szucsits latest Davenport’s offering carried a double meaning. It reflected her sometimes bumpy journey to find that “someone,” but also embraced her way back to Davenport’s stage following some health challenges (which she wisely chose not to detail in the show) which kept her sidelined for a few years. She is in particularly fine voice. Her upper register is silky and supported, and her lower is rich, with no disconnect between the two. Over the years she has learned to make us wait for the big high notes and we appreciate them more. “Come On-a My House” was delivered with jazzy sensuality and was well served by music director Nick Sula’s Basie-like piano chops.

Szucsits made an effective argument for taking that chance on love with Rupert Holmes’ “The People That You Never Get to Love.” “Accident Prone” (Laurence O’Keefe/Kirsten A. Guenther) was a standout in this well-executed show. She captures the layers in this complex story song about cruel responses following accidental mishaps and misunderstandings.

Szucsits delivered it all to a captivated audience. Throughout the show, Sula brought rich arrangements, good harmonies, and loving chemistry with the vocalist.
