The Arizona Broadway Theatre, founded by Kiel and Cassandra Klaphake, is celebrating its 14th season, having evolved from productions in a tent to a state-of-the-art dinner theater. They produce a season of eight Broadway musicals and cast out of New York as well as from the professional singers/dancers based in Arizona. During the run of each show, the Arizona audience can experience After Dark Cabaret hosted by their Associate Artistic Director and director/choreographer Kurtis Overby. Think of Jim Caruso, Billy Stritch, and Seth Rudetsky rolled into one emcee and pianist.

Although he did not sing on Friday night following the performance of Hair, he has appeared in many roles including the Emcee in Cabaret. He is funny, irreverent, bold, and very quick at improvisation with the audience.
He introduced nine songs performed as solos and duets by cast members ranging from the opener, “Do You Remember” beautifully acted by R.J. Magee, to “All I Ask” (Adele/Philip Lawrence/Bruno Mars/Chris Brown), to “Elaborate Lives” (Elton John/Tim Rice) performed by Nick Kuhn and Renée Kathleen Koher.

Liane Zielinski, a talented soprano, gave a nuanced and perfectly crafted “Will He Like Me?

Corinne Scott brought down the house with her rendition of “No Good Deed” (Stephen Schwartz), which Kurtis whined about having to play and then delivered perfect accompaniment for.

Arizonan Lynzee 4Man, who played Jeanie in Hair, delivered an articulate and theatrical version of “White Rabbit” (Grace Slick) accompanied by her talented pianist and husband Mark. After Kurtis brought “red sweater,” one of the more boisterous patrons to the stage for some fun, the evening concluded with the introduction of Adrian Rifat who played Berger in Hair. Kurtis launched into the story of Rifat’s New York audition for the show, which started with a request to take off his shoes and concluded with his much more revealing finale. He got the part. Rifat has a sparkle in his eyes which is infectious.

His rendition of “Hands” (Jewel/Patrick Leonard) had the audience roaring as he subtly added little rubber hands to each finger.
Let’s hope that ABT will deliver cabaret more often. They are opening The Encore Room on May 7 with guest artist Jason Robert Brown during the run of The Bridges of Madison County. And beginning in their 15th season, they are forming a partnership with the Herberger Theater to take musical theater to downtown Phoenix.
