I Believe in Love: A Musical Celebration of Valentine’s Day

David Raleigh’s Valentine’s Day return to the back room at Pangea should become an annual tradition. A calm performer with a bevy of original love songs as well as a taste for classics, Raleigh’s Valentine vibe struck playful and happy notes with his touch of upbeat jazzy swing meets pining.
Happy as can be behind the keys, Raleigh showered the crowd with cut-out paper hearts and, with as large a smile as ever, he stepped away from the piano to serenade the crowd while walking around the room.
A man after our hearts, and apparently mine, too, he wrote one of the “punniest” medleys combining “How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky)” (Irving Berlin), “How Deep Is Your Love” (Bee Gees), and “How Deep Is Your Love” (Calvin Harris/Disciples). The songs fit together very well, especially since the Harris song also utilized the line, “Is it like the ocean?

” As for Raleigh’s originals, “Technicolor Dream” stood out because of its pleasant melody and catchy chorus, “Roses are blue/ Violets are red/ And the grass is green instead/ Everything’s wrong, but it’s all right…living in a Technicolor dream.
”
Raleigh also let his band members, most of whom have worked with him before, show off their skills. Tony Carfora on the saxophone/EWI (electronic wind instrument) put together some nice solos.

He’s a true pleasure to hear. Alongside them was Danny Weller (bass), Daniel Glass (drums), and Devon Yesberger (keyboard). While Raleigh played the piano well, he did step in front of the band for about half the show, taking advantage of Yesberger’s consistent ability.

Raleigh’s originals are available on CD, and the group will be back in action for Jazz in the City at The Duplex starting in April, with more appearances throughout the calendar year.
