The beautiful Sandy Bainum made her Broadway debut in the chorus of David Merrick’s production 42nd Street. After taking time out from her theatrical career to raise a family, she has returned to New York with a delightful, well thought-out show, simply titled Simply. The songs, mostly chosen from the Great American Songbook, were carefully selected to form a musical autobiography.

Bainum is able to blend a breezy, light jazz style with her classically trained coloratura soprano voice. She opened with a cheery “A Cock-Eyed Optimist” followed by an explanation of why her title song was “Simply.

” “Goodnight My Someone,” from her stage portrayal of Marian Paroo in The Music Man, allowed Bainum to display her lovely soprano voice, reminiscent of Barbara Cook and Shirley Jones. “Bluesette,” performed with musical director Lanny Meyers, was great fun. Bainum introduced each song with an explanation of why it was important in her life, which made the Legrand/Bergman “On My Way to You” particularly poignant.

Her beautiful sound worked particularly well in her closing number, a medley of “Beautiful Land” and “Pure Imagination.” Bainum’s experience as a stage actress made her encore “You and Me Against the World,” a truly moving experience.
