Natalie Toro

Broadway actress/singer Natalie Toro has released her new, self-titled CD. Right at the top, Toro sings in perfect pitch in a stunningly powerful and rich voice. She is es-pecially effective here singing ballads from Broadway (and television) like Maury Yeston’s “Unusual Way” from Nine and Sondheim’s “I Remember” (Evening Primrose). Make no mistake, these, and other grand selections are the singular sensations they are meant to be—as is Ms. Toro. However, there are serious quibbles that must be noted. While she offers ethereal turns in abundance, too often the voice is obstructed by overblown special effects, like zapped-up echo or reverb effects. Proper use of such techniques in the mix can enhance any song as long as it is balanced. It’s that simple.

Ms. Toro is too good for just passable mixing on an otherwise impressively sung album. Her team, which seems duly qualified, did an admirable job on other cuts. Regrettably, they occasionally missed the mark on the likes of “I Dreamed a Dream” and particularly “Where Is It Written?” The overblown consequences almost drown her out. Those are the most obvious cuts where much less would have been much more. After all, her stunning voice is balanced with a classicist’s understanding of traditional musical values and a superb vocal technique. In contrast, a haunting “If I Could” is given a no-frills, heartfelt reading with Ralph Agresta’s lilting guitar only—and minimal denouement. The effect is riveting, making for the album’s finest cut. Had that same arc and balance been used throughout, Ms. Toro would have the album she deserves.
