![]() Ms. Toro is too good for just passable mixing on an otherwise impressively sung album. Her team, which seems duly qualified, did an admirable job on other cuts. Regrettably, they occasionally missed the mark on the likes of “I Dreamed a Dream” and particularly “Where Is It Written?” The overblown consequences almost drown her out. Those are the most obvious cuts where much less would have been much more. After all, her stunning voice is balanced with a classicist’s understanding of traditional musical values and a superb vocal technique. In contrast, a haunting “If I Could” is given a no-frills, heartfelt reading with Ralph Agresta’s lilting guitar only—and minimal denouement. The effect is riveting, making for the album’s finest cut. Had that same arc and balance been used throughout, Ms. Toro would have the album she deserves. John Hoglund |
