Christiane Noll

The Ira Gershwin Album

Christiane Noll is best known for creating the role of Emma on Broadway in Jekyll & Hyde and recently starred in the Broadway revival of Ragtime in the role of Mother. She has a versatility enabling her to take on comedy, drama, jazz and opera. This latest performance highlights the talents of Ira Gershwin, lyricist. Since Ms. Noll considers herself a “lyric hound,” she’s chosen the right source.

Her pitch perfect, crystalline soprano is quite beautiful. Looking slim, trim and beautiful, she is charming in her presentation and at ease.

Together with accompanist Jason DeBord, Noll rekindled some Ira Gershwin favorites including a sweet, but sexy slurred interpretation of “I Was Doing All Right” and spun some poignant key changes with “Long Ago and Far Away.” This is the first time I heard a female version of “Tschaikowsky and Other Russians,” a feat in rapid speed. But I still say, leave it to Mark Nadler or Danny Kaye. A slow, "ssssss" led into a cutesy “’S Wonderful,” a vehicle for a really good time, giving Noll a chance to let go.

The transition from the Broadway stage to the intimacy of cabaret requires some study. There should be less gripping of the microphone and stand; lowering some song keys to avoid a continuing similarity in sound and “singing less” would help.  A good director would work wonders!
