The question, above, is clear. The answer, just as clear, is “not by a long shot.” And the evidence: three-dozen theater, movie and popular songs from the 1960s through the 1990s, assembled by the program’s artistic director, Andrea Marcovicci. Serving also as the show’s scripter, host and cast member, she proved her point solidly with a who’s who of modern songwriting, including Burt Bacharach/Hal David, John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Lennon and McCartney, Billy Joel, Michel Legrand and the Bergmans, even Dolly Parton. The theater, too, was well represented by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, Jerry Herman, Stephen Schwartz, Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban, the writers of Hair and Rent, and, of course, Stephen Sondheim. Andrea’s other performers, imported from California, were the effervescent Francesca Amari, musical-theater pro Kelly Houston, recording artist Lee Lessack, and cabaret’s Stacy Sullivan. Special guest was Helen Marcovicci, Andrea’s mother, whose heartfelt, unadorned singing won the audience’s strongest applause. L&L now takes a hiatus, until January.
