Karen Mason

Love, Love, Love

Karen Mason has owned craft for decades. She brings the limber voice and moves. She combines strength and intimacy in a way few singers can. But in Love, Love, Love, something artistically mature is happening to Mason. She makes us wait longer for the power chops, rendering them more precious.  Singing easier allows her quieter interpretations to land more simply and thus more richly. “It’s a Whole New World” is no cartoon song in her hands; it’s sexual and lush.  I also appreciated how Mason didn't rush the start of Frank Loesser’s “Murder, He Says.” The shtick is funnier when we can listen and there's certainly enough time to goose the speed as the song unfurls. (That song ain't easy.) I have heard too many singers rush it and grows dull. The audience was on its feet mid-show, as its home town girl landed a powerhouse medley of “Somewhere” and “Impossible Dream.” Love, Love, Love is a beautiful Valentine, indeed.
