German Rodriguez

The Nearness of You

Broadway Baby Bistro
New York, NY
German Rodriguez often guests in singer-pianist David Pellegrene’s weekly “New Faces Of Cabaret” Sunday shows at Broadway Baby Bistro (he’ll be back)* now does his own shows there.  He’s grown in confidence and stage presence, but retains his appealingly modest, gracious ways.   In his early 20s, Mexican-born German (pronounced Air-mon) performs in English and Spanish.   The skilled tenor’s voice can be pure, soar, and is sure to score.  His rapturous delivery of “Unchained Melody” remains his best showpiece.  It builds and gathers strength, showing real passion and impressive head tones.  “Besame Mucho” is muchos sultry; a duet with attentive, polished musical director David on “Open Arms” is potent.  Swoon-worthy though it is, opening and closing with “The Nearness Of You,” without a significant change in approach only served to underscore the shortness of the set list.  Short, yes, but short and sweet—very sweet on the ears.  And muy magnifico!
