Cory Jamison

Thirty-seven

Davenport's
Chicago, IL
Cory Jamison offers that perfect balance between elegance and approachability.  Her show,Thirty-seven ,exclusively features tunes written in 1937-- a treasure trove because Irving Berlin, George Gershwin (in his, sadly, final year) and Cole Porter, the master American Songbook composers, were prolific in 1937. One standout is a syncopated jazz version of "Hi Ho, Hi Ho," from Disney’s film Snow White. Jamison's grownup approach to a "children’s song" truly delights. Another special moment comes with"“Too Marvelous for Words" with music by Richard Whiting and a Johnny Mercer's list of romantic attributes.  Jamison tackles Mercer's list with aplomb with a reprise speed round.  It’s fun and we appreciate how her clear diction makes it work. Jamison's voice is a joy; smooth and rich even on the highest notes. The vintage cocktail dress is lovely. Thirty-seven is a class act performed by a class act.
