Enter singing! The Puppini Sisters squeezed briskly past packed tables onto The Oak Room stage, and proceeded immediately to make the space come alive with their music. Singing in 1940s-style three-part harmony, backed by a gypsy-swing trio of musicians, and also accompanying themselves on varied instruments, the British ladies were delightful to hear, lovely and lively to see, and simply great fun. And they aren't even sisters: they are Marcella Puppini, brunette, and founder of the group; Kate Mullins, blonde, and Stephanie O'Brien, flaming redhead, together turning their talents not only to such classics as "Mr. Sandman," "Jeepers Creepers" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" but also to songs popularized by contemporary singers such as Blondie, Kate Bush, Gloria Gaynor and The Smiths. Representing still another imaginative booking for the room, the trio has been saluted by no less a critic than Prince Charles. His enthusiastic comment: "Splendid!"
