Barb Jungr

Metropolitan Room
New York, NY
Barb Jungr, who previously made a fan of this writer with - unexpectedly enough - Bob Dylan songs, returned to the Metropolitan Room to celebrate the re-issuance of her CD, Bare, recorded a decade earlier and now re-titled Bare Again. Putting Dylan aside, Jungr once again displayed a presence that filled the room, as she included "My Father" by Joan Collins, Jacques Brel's "Sons of...," Roger Miller's "King of the Road," and others, including four songs for which Jungr herself was lyricist. She was at times driving, sometimes especially melodic, other times soft and reflective. Her rendition of "Au Depart" by Robb Johnson was rueful, moody, almost haunting. On stage, Jungr is a body constantly in motion - while she sings and while she allows her accompanist, Charlie Giodano, solo breaks.

Jungr's talents as a vocalist, inarguably absorbing, are only part of the story. Her abilities to communicate are notable. Not solely the impact of her lyrics, but her way of alternately amusing, fascinating and captivating listeners with unlikely anecdotes ranging from strange to poignant.

There was an unannounced bit of festivity at the opening night performance. Preceding her encore, Jungr was presented with a birthday cake, as her audience, welcoming the opportunity, chimed in on a pitchy rendition of "Happy Birthday."
