Carole Cook

Dress Up

New Conservatory Theatre
San Francisco, CA
Carole Cook was in town for her yearly appearance at the Richmond Ermet AIDS Foundation’s annual Home for the Holiday Show and graciously decided to also appear at NCT’s Divas in December schedule. And Ms. Cook certainly is a diva in the nicest sense – a larger-than-life character able to poke great fun at herself, while maintaining the class and style befitting a grand dame of the theatre/cabaret scene (remarking about her full figure, Ms. Cook proudly assets that “I’ve’ been battling anorexia for years, and won!”).

Fondly known as one of "the Lunts of L.A. Theater," she received an honorary 2002 Los Angeles Ovation Award for Career Achievement. A musical comedy star of stage, screen and cabaret, Carole has been heavily involved in the fight against AIDS for the past two decades. Dress Up gives Ms. Cook the opportunity to show off her comic gift for story-telling. Whether its hilarious anecdotes of her Abilene Texas Southern Baptist childhood or reminiscences of her famous showbiz compatriots (Lucille Ball and David Merrick), Cook is able to find the absurd or poignant moments in her long, rich history.

The opening night crowd which included local cabaret luminaries (Connie Champagne, Sharon McNight and Shawn Ryan) giddily went along on the ride. The show opened with "Red Hot Mamma" and included a wry and humorous rendition of "Nobody Does It Like Me" from Seesaw, a surprisingly sad and haunting "Have I Stayed Too Long at the Fair" and a rousing finale of Jerry Herman’s "Before the Parade Passes By" from Hello, Dolly!. Ms. Cook has seen many a parade and nothing, absolutely nothing passes her by.
