Chicago Paris Cabaret Connexion

Chicago Paris Cabaret Connexion—an international conversation on the past, present, and future of cabaret—takes place in Chicago, Illinois from October 28 through November 4, 2018. Cabaret performers, master teachers, accompanists, promoters, and writers, along with fans from Paris, London, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and beyond are gathering for the first U.S. conference of the Chicago Paris Cabaret Connexion.

Where it all began: Paris, France on September 16, 2017 at the Studio Raspail with
Marie-Thérèse Orain, Claudia Hommel, Martin Penet, Gilbert Lafaille, Xavier Lacouture,
Gilles Tcherniak, Anne Sylvestre

Guided by the theme “Advancing Together the Art of Cabaret,” the conference is offering:

  • Roundtable discussions on the business, economics, and future of cabaret as we create an international network.
  • The Chicago premiere of the cabaret documentary,The Torchbearers with filmmaker Cheryl E. Grant.
  • Four “Razzle-Dazzle” song and multimedia presentations on the history of cabaret in France, New York, and Chicago—with Josephine Baker’s secretary Michèle Barbier, Charles Troy, June Sawyers, Jacques Protat, Yves Bertrand, and Françoise Miran.

  • 40 hours of master classes and workshops for singers, songwriters, accompanists and auditors to explore:

Connecting to your song and your audience
Physicality
Vocal power
Vocal colors
Songwriting
Comedy in song
Jazz
Burlesque
Rearranging the song
Putting your act together

  • Six days with Broadway star Faith Prince and music director Alex Rybeck; and a day each with coaches Dale Calandra, Elisabeth Howard, Elizabeth Doyle, Greta Pope, Kyle Hustedt, Spider Saloff; Clotilde Rullaud and Christian Pagès of Paris; and Paul L. Martin of London.
  • Concerts at International House University of Chicago, Alliance Française de Chicago, Old Town School of Folk Music, DePaul University School of Music. And of course some impromptu carousing at some of Chicago’s iconic open mics.

Senior coordinator of the project, Claudia Hommel, urges cabaret singers from across the country to join this conference. “We are offering eight exciting days to look and listen, to sing, to perform, and to learn with fellow artists and fans from both sides of the Atlantic.
