Shane Orser

Shane Orser’s pizzazz, smooth dancing, and suave way with words propelled him through a set centered mainly on enjoying the easy side of life. Songs like “The Gypsy in My Soul” with lines such as “There is no other life of which I’m fonder” depicted the sojourner Orser has been. Describing his life as a mix of “pills, planes, and trains” to a couple of “amens” from the crowd, Orser wondered whether he had wandered into the right room and joked about some of his stranger singing gigs over the years such, as an Italian Heritage festival in West Virginia (?!).

He definitely came to the right place.

Returning to New York yet another time over the past year, he noted that it really is like a river, where things and people change. But, making his New York cabaret debut hopefully prompts him to stay put. That, and the appearance of plenty of friends as guest stars, including Ato Blankson-Wood, Anjali Date, Joe Donohoe, Kate S. Ferber, and Shaina Taub. Performing duets with each, Orser and his friends struck up a unique chemistry with each song, and often—especially with Date on “When You Believe” (Stephen Schwartz/Babyface)—showcased eerily good timing.

Orser and Taub’s “You’ve Got a Friend” (Carole King) stood out, as Taub’s potent voice brought out Orser’s best, too.

Taub’s been making a name for herself in recent Shakespeare adaptations she’s composed for The Public Theater.

Dan Garmon (piano), Lloyd Ikoler (bass), Jakob Reinhardt (guitar), and Attis Clopton (drums) supported Orser well. Reinhardt stood out the most in the group, bringing a sweet sound to a consistent performance by all. Keep an eye out for Orser’s charming flair. Director Gerry Geddes is putting more plans into action.
