Drunk Musicals

Beauty and the Bourbon

The Duplex, NYC, January 22, 2018

What happens when you get a bunch of your performer friends together to put on the classic, sexually repressive Disney musical, Beauty and the Beast, with now-antiquated gender roles and add a “liberal” dash of whiskey double shots? Well, you get all sorts of ruckus, from mixing accents (cough, Mrs. Potts, wink) to plenty of biting social commentary. Although Joshua Doss as Cogsworth had the swiftest mouth when it came to digging at Disney (and other performers like Mrs. Potts), after a string of four or five shots during one song, Jake McKenna’s Lumiere lit hotter than a McDonald’s griddle during breakfast hours saying, “I’m sweating like Chris Christie on a public beach.”

Headlining the night was the fantastic duo of Kaylee MacKnight (as Belle) and Kyle Huey (as The Beast). They matched each others’ intensity with big voices and an ability to hold their bourbon, although it took the crowd a while to buy Huey his first drink. Combine them with McKenna’s drunken French accent and plenty of intermingling among the guests by the members of the ensemble during songs like “Be Our Guest,” and Drunk Musicals made for a great time. Brianne Moore’s Mrs. Potts seemed to stay the most sober through the whiskey, ‘though Andrew Mayer as Gaston and Tyce Green as LeFou already had a lot of pizazz as they got into character.

Not to be outmatched, cellist Rachel Gawell utilized a hollow leg to rock her pieces, despite the steadiest flow of alcohol for the evening.

Michael Ferrara took to the piano, Charles Kiger took to the drums, and Jared Newlen had the flute/piccolo. They somehow stayed dry the whole time, along with some of the members of the ensemble, which included Alexa Welch, Christian Luu, Mari Uchida, Kevin Riddaugh, and Patrick Mullen III.

Get ready to see this group in their next Disney done straight up and dirty like a good vodka martini.
