Richard Baskin, Jr. settled in nicely at The Duplex for his First Night Out! Performing a positive song set about moving beyond a destructive former love, he reached into the depths of his emotions and ours in stirring fashion. Utilizing both the lingering memory of the negatives, as well as the positives from friends who have supported him through nearly a decade (many in the audience,) he entranced and inspired.

Baskin especially impressed on the combination of “Crazy” and “I Will Survive” (made famous by Gloria Gaynor, written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris).

He also had fun following thrilling piano solos, by pianist Nich Mueller, with his vocals on the jazz standard “I Thought About You” (Jimmy Van Heusen/Johnny Mercer).

Can’t say enough about Mueller’s ability to work through multiple piano solos within Baskin’s set.

It was such a delight and prompted fellow musicians—Sam Weber (bass) and Josh Roberts (drums)—to follow suit with their own impressive solos during “Honeysuckle Rose” (Fats Waller/Andy Razaf.

) Roberts utilized one snare drum to the fullest with excellent rhythm, making it seem at times like multiple drums.

Baskin was also joined by a quartet of guest singers—Anastasia Tally, Taylor Pearlstein, Kianee Truvillion, Jacob McKenna—for a pair of songs.

Most notably was “So in Love” (Jill Scott/Anthony Hamilton/JR Hutson/Kelvin Wooten), where Tally brought a lot of spice to the jazziness of the song. Pearlstein, Truvillion, and McKenna shined, too, when given the spotlight and are worth checking out.

Can’t wait to see where these performers show up next!
