Holiday Twinn

The Rescignos were back again at The Duplex for the 9th installment of their successful holiday spectacular series! Featuring complex jokes and awesome guest stars caroling away, the show brought out the best in good holiday vibes. Robbie and Paul Rescigno started the night off with a stand-up routine featuring Paul dressed in a Carpenters’ album costume and, I happen to agree, “it’s safe to say [he] ‘nailed’ it.” They followed their intro with the classic Rescignos theme song which introduced this stellar duo as a pair like Cheech and Chong belting, “You simply can’t have one without the other.”

The most interesting and unique skill that the brothers brought to the show was their ability to include a multitude of interconnected jokes that built as the show advanced. The most memorable was definitely Paul’s joke about his attempt at gauging the shelf life of his famous Chocolate Cheesecake Balls (which he handed out at the end of the show) as part of an effort to commercialize them. After every time he ducked backstage for a guest or one of Robbie’s song bits, Paul would return, mentioning that he was up to as much as “Week 36.

” This climaxed during “White Christmas” (Irving Berlin) when Paul got “sick” and the song was interrupted by Paul’s farting! Yes, they weren’t above toilet humor, but they also did other jokes, including Paul versus Robbie’s gift-giving and Paul’s attempts at summoning Mjolnir to prove his good heart.

Spoiler Alert: In the end, he summoned Mjolnir!

The duo was aided by an awesome cast and, especially, by the magnificent Elijah Caldwell, who sang “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” (Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich/Phil Spector). His ability to project with such ease definitely makes him a singer to look out for in the new year!

Additionally, John Anderson, who did a series of background announcements about the Rescignos’ “sponsors” in a beautifully deep voice, stepped into the spotlight briefly to perform “Sxxy Christmastym,” which he joked was a “family holiday favorite.” At one point, he did a sexy dance on his knees only to be helped back up by the trio of Aimee Cucchiaro, Caitlin Thurnauer, and Rebecca Weiner. Those three and fellow performers Peter Dagger and Jason Shelton helped add to the show’s well-thought-out and orchestrated feel.

Pianist and musical director Matt Podd teamed up well with Weiner’s choreography. The costumes and props were also exceptional, including different-sized framed layouts of Frasier’s apartment from the TV show of the same name, which the Rescignos used for a dick joke, with Paul remarking afterward, “That was a long way to go for a dick joke.”

Personally, I can’t wait to see what they put together for year 10. Even the same show twice would be fun to see. But, from my understanding, they switch it up every year. Whatever the Rescignos plan, I am sure it will be another sold-out hit!
