Toshi Cappuchino

Toshi Cappuccino’s spirit certainly flowered during his stand-out performance at The Duplex. He came in dressed in a beautiful red silk shirt that looked like a play on a traditional kimono, and transformed mid-show into a drag queen dressed in a black and gold dress with four-inch heels. If it weren’t impressive enough that he strutted comfortably in those and a blonde wig, he did one better by jumping around and dancing passionately.

The only thing better than Cappuccino’s truly wonderful voice was his understanding of and catering to his audience, which was almost exclusively Japanese. He put on a gritty performance for them through challenging songs balancing both Japanese and English.

Many of these he painstakingly translated himself, including “Empire State of Mind,” “Fever,” and a stellar “Tennessee Waltz.”

Having never performed a song about New York since starting as a cabaret performer in the city in 2005, his medley of “Theme from New York, New York” (Kander & Ebb) and “Empire State” followed by “New York State of Mind” was easily a highlight. Not only did he showcase his exceptional talent, but he was able to fit complicated Japanese sentences into the same melody. Terrific!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Cappuccino will also be performing two extra special shows in Tokyo: on November 10 and, for his musical Super Late Bloomer, opening in January. It’s the first show that he won’t self-produce since starting out, and it promises to be special.

He will be back before then at The Duplex to perform his musical’s songs as a special treat for his New York-based fans, but we got an early taste of his material, too. “Yobai,” and the titular song were so much fun!
