Colleen Michelle O’Connell & Maxmillian Henney

The duo of Colleen Michelle O’Connell and Maxmillian Henney had the jokes and songs to make for an entertaining evening, often working off each other in well-rehearsed bits mostly about, you got it, relationship drama. Have they done this before? It did sound a little robotic at first, but when O’Connell cracked, “Please, you’re a messy bitch that lives for drama,” after the second song, everything loosened up.

Henney and O’Connell both worked best in the lower ranges of their voices, which featured adequate depth. They also sounded good together, most impressively during a portion of “I Am Not Unchanged,” recorded by Adele and written by Adele/Dan Wilson/Greg Wells, harmonizing “I dare you to let me be the one and only.” Though similar stylistically, Henney had my favorite songs of the evening, starting with Pasek and Paul’s “I’ve Gotta Run,” where he crooned about falling in and leaving love only to be left by himself in the end.

O’Connell did have the better joke delivery, suggesting that she’d start her “eat, pray, love journey” after the show. Her strongest song, Shoshana Bean’s “I Am Not Unchanged,” rang true, especially when she went deeper, impressively delivering “If I had to find a silver lining, I’m a better me for loving you.” At times she could be a little overpowering in the higher pitches.

Overall, these confident performers delivered well-constructed jokes, taking advantage of their chemistry. I look forward to seeing these young performers develop their work.
